西边的太阳快贴住刚犁过的田地了，河对岸高高的树林黑黝黝地映出了轮廓。住在烟囱上的燕子在院子里急速地飞来飞去，鸡、鸭、火鸡成群结队，高视阔步，大摇大摆地从野外归来。
斯图尔特大喊一声：“吉姆斯！”不一会儿就有一个和他们年纪相仿的高个子黑人青年从房子后面气喘吁吁地跑了出来，朝拴在一边的马跑过去。吉姆斯是他们的男仆，像那几条狗一样，他们到哪儿就跟到哪儿，从小就陪伴他们一块儿玩，哥儿俩十岁那年，指定他做了他们的仆人。一见他过来，塔尔顿家的猎狗便从一片红色的尘土中站起来，等候主人上路。哥儿俩向斯佳丽鞠躬致意，握手告辞，告诉她说哥儿俩明天一早就在韦尔克斯家等她。随后两人快步走过甬道，跳上马背，后面紧跟着吉姆斯，沿两边长满雪松的大道驱驰而去，一边向斯佳丽挥帽呼喊，再一次道别。
他们在盖满尘土的大道上拐过一个弯，看不见塔拉庄园了，于是布伦特便在一丛山茱萸边勒住马。斯图尔特也停下来，黑仆人在他们后面几步远的地方也停住了脚。马儿发现缰绳松了，就伸长脖子啃地上嫩绿的春草，耐性十足的猎狗又在红色尘土中躺卧下来，贪婪地仰望着在一阵阵暗下来的暮色中飞来飞去的燕子。布伦特那张直率的面孔上露出困惑的神色，还带有一丝愤慨。

出生于美国富有庄园人家的这双胞胎兄弟，出行够有阵式，骏马、猎狗，还有黑人佣人相随伺候，这日子过的，简直是神仙般的惬意了。
不学无术、脑袋简单的这双胞胎兄弟，社会礼仪方面做得还是相当到位的，想蹭饭吃没成功，仍然非常礼貌地告辞。这也说明，美国南北战争爆发前夕的南方，富人间已形成约定熟成的礼仪风格，作为下人的一般黑人佣人，也懂得自己的地位和职责。社会层级基本如此固化。
但，即将爆发的美国南北战争，打破了美国南方富人及富家子弟天堂般美好生活的一切。
